About Georgie Purcell, MP, AJP
Georgie Purcell is an Animal Justice Party MP for Northern Victoria and one of Australia’s most outspoken advocates for tackling online gendered violence and the misogyny women face in public life.
Since entering Parliament, Georgie has experienced relentless sexist and gendered abuse online – including sexual harassment, threats and attacks targeting her appearance, past, relationships and motherhood.
In 2023, she brought that abuse into parliament by wearing a dress printed with some of the messages she had received to demonstrate what women in politics are expected to endure simply for being visible.
In 2024, Georgie became the subject of another form of digital misogyny when a news outlet published a digitally altered image of her. The incident sparked a global conversation about the way women are represented and objectified in the media.
She has also spoken publicly about the growing influence of the online manosphere and the way misogynistic communities and influencers can normalise contempt for women, particularly among boys and young men.
While sexist abuse is a threat to every woman in public life, Georgie says her experience is amplified by the fact she challenges many male dominated sectors, such as the duck shooting fraternity and the greyhound racing industry. Most recently, Greyhound Racing Victoria implemented sexism training following multiple disciplinary actions for comments and messages left by participants on her social media.
Georgie has criticised governments for treating online gendered abuse as an individual problem rather than a systemic threat to women’s safety and democratic participation. She continues to campaign for stronger accountability, better protections and meaningful action to address the online environments that allow misogyny to flourish.” {Information supplied]
